The dream
It begins with awe. A powerful dog: fearless, loyal, and beautiful- fills the screen. A dream is born without a plan.

The illusion of research
Research is done a few weeks only. Enough information to feel confident, but not enough to be prepared. Warnings are brushed aside because they don’t match the dream. In truth, they receive only 10-30% of the information they need to know.
In reality, it takes a long time to research and prepare yourself for 10-15 years of commitment living with a diff. species that does not behave or communicate like a human. Read About Me to better understand what I mean!

The purchase
Google searches “puppies for sale” and money is exchanged. Many unknowingly purchase a puppy from a backyard breeder. This is where issues begin regarding health, temperament, and a lack of breeder support. News flash: when things go wrong, they abandon you.

Dog is 8-15 months old: cuteness fades, instincts don’t
The puppy grows FAST. Strength increases, boundaries are tested, and behavioral issues emerge. The dog changes but the owner doesn’t. Frustration turns into fear. Fear of the dog, of judgement, of failure.

The cost of being unprepared
Panic research begins and thousands of dollars are spent in to hiring a trainer, if they can afford one. Most go through 2-3 trainers until they find someone who actually helps them.
Many don’t find the truth, but there are 2 main components of being a dog owner: training & how you live with your dog. The lifestyle. It’s not just how you train a dog.

The final drop-off
The dog is labeled “problematic” or “too much”. It enters a shelter that is overcapacity and under-resourced. It is not a happy ending for the majority of dogs, especially for guardian breeds. The story ends not because the dog failed, but because the system did. People did.
